UN Scientist Suggest Government To Ban Pesticide Endosulfan Use

Posted by IMers at 7:29 AM ,

A group of scientists from the United Nations (UN) urged governments to prohibit the use of the pesticide endosulfan , widely used in plantations, the risk of damage to the nerves of the farm workers and wildlife.

The 31 members of the Committee on Review of Persistent Organic Pollutants claim that the pesticide is in the list of chemicals that should be discarded. A spokesman Environment Programme United Nations, says that governments should decide in April 2011 following the recommendation during a meeting of the signatories of the Stockholm Convention on hazardous chemicals.

Michael Stanley Jones said 60 countries have already banned endosulfan , including the United States, which does not belong to the Stockholm Convention. The pesticide is used in some fruits and vegetables, and cotton plantations, coffee, sugar cane and soybeans.

In Brazil, the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) ruled in August the total withdrawal of endosulfan in the market for a period of three years and a ban on imports of July 31, 2011. Some rules, such as suspension of use for ant control in metal packaging and bottling have already entered into force.

According Anvisa, the measure is based on toxicological studies that link the application of pesticides on reproduction and endocrine rural workers and the general population. Endosulfan is already banned in 44 countries and has suffered severe restrictions in more than 16. The pesticide was placed on review in 2008, but by a series of judgments, a reassessment was blocked for nearly a year.

Hope that in Peru also take appropriate action against the pesticide and prevent further damage to health and the environment.
