Why Are Restaurant Websites So Horrifically Bad?

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 06:52 PM PDT

Check out this article from Slate that explains some reasons restaurant websites are bad. It makes sense if you ask me, but we should capitalize on these weaknesses in our offline marketing.

This is my favorite quote from it since I do mobile websites, and did not know the official stat. This is from the the head marketer of OpenTable:

Quote:

One-third of restaurant's reservations occur online during hours in which the restaurant is closed, Jampol says, and more than 10 percent of diners are coming from mobile devices.

This quote also stands out because this is the exact pitch I use when I come across a flash website.

Quote:

Not all is lost. I spoke to a few restaurateurs who've created great, easy to use, elegant sites, and they all said they were motivated by one thing: They were missing out on traffic from mobile devices.
The article can be found here: http://www.slate.com/id/2301228/pagenum/all/#p2

The article is pretty long so here are some key excerpts:

Quote:

While lots of people have noted the general terribleness of restaurant sites, I haven't ever seen an explanation for why this industry's online presence is so singularly bruising. The rest of the Web long ago did away with auto-playing music, Flash buttons and menus, and elaborate intro pages, but restaurant sites seem stuck in 1999. The problem is getting worse in the age of the mobile Web—Flash doesn't work on Apple's devices, and while some of these sites do load on non-Apple smartphones, they take forever to do so, and their finicky navigation makes them impossible to use.
Over the last few weeks I've spent countless hours, now lost forever, plumbing the depths of restaurant Web hell. I also spoke to several industry experts about the reasons behind all these maliciously poorly designed pages. I heard several theories for why restaurant sites are so bad—that they can't afford to pay for good designers, that they don't understand what people want from a site, and that they don't really care what's on their site. But the best answer I found was this: Restaurant sites are the product of restaurant culture. These nightmarish websites were spawned by restaurateurs who mistakenly believe they can control the online world the same way they lord over a restaurant. "In restaurants, the expertise is in the kitchen and in hospitality in general," says Eng San Kho, a partner at the New York design firm Love and War, which has created several unusually great restaurant sites (more on those in a bit). "People in restaurants have a sense that they want to create an entertainment experience online—that's why disco music starts, that's why Flash slideshows open. They think they can still play the host even here online."
...
Quote:

I did get a plausible-sounding explanation of the design process from Tom Bohan, who heads up Menupages, the fantastic site that lists menus of restaurants in several large cities. "Say you're a designer and you've got to demo a site you've spent two months creating," Bohan explains. "Your client is someone in their 50s who runs a restaurant but is not very in tune with technology. What's going to impress them more: Something with music and moving images, something that looks very fancy to someone who doesn't know about optimizing the Web for consumer use, or if you show them a bare-bones site that just lists all the information? I bet it would be the former—they would think it's great and money well spent."
Not coincidentally, designers make more money to create a complicated, multipage Flash site than one that tells you everything you want to know on one page. Bohan, for one, isn't complaining about the terrible state of restaurant websites. Menupages, which lists each restaurant in its database by menu, operating hours, price, and address, is one of several sites that benefits from bad restaurant pages. (Yelp and Urbanspoon are also good resources.) Menupages' menus are formatted as Web pages, whereas many restaurants require you to spend time downloading a PDF file. This is because restaurants often don't have tools to update the text on their sites—saving and replacing a PDF file of a menu is easier than messing with the code on the site. But, again, this reduces usability, and pushes people to use third-party sites.
..

Quote:

This can't be good for restaurants. Scott Jampol, the head of consumer marketing at the reservations site OpenTable, points out that the Web is one of the primary ways that people determine where to get dinner. One-third of restaurant's reservations occur online during hours in which the restaurant is closed, Jampol says, and more than 10 percent of diners are coming from mobile devices. But many in the restaurant industry don't understand how important the Web is to their businesses. "The fact that it's a front door for many customers is still a new idea," he says.

Not all is lost. I spoke to a few restaurateurs who've created great, easy to use, elegant sites, and they all said they were motivated by one thing: They were missing out on traffic from mobile devices. The steakhouse chain Morton's, for instance, has a mobile site that uses your GPS location to get you information on the restaurant closest to you. The site loads up quickly, and lets you make a reservation in a matter of seconds. "We wanted to keep the bells and whistles at a minimum," Roger Drake, the company's head of marketing, told me.

New Dell... format and install Windows 7 or delete programs?

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 06:50 PM PDT

I have two choices I guess.

I can use my Dell as delivered and delete all the crap they install on it or I can format the computer and start fresh. But that will take HOURS.

What would you do?

Some questions that you should ask before making campaigns

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 06:31 PM PDT

Hi
Here are some questions you should ask before making campaigns emails

1 – Have you experienced periods of rush in the design of your previous campaigns? What changes could be made for you to be calmer? Why not think about calling your provider of email marketing that supports you and relieve some tasks.
.
2 – Which of your e-mails generated the best conversion rate? Determine the causes of such a performance: what offers were found in the content? What was the purpose of the message? What day was it sent? At what time of day? You'll have a clearer idea of practices that you can repeat later.
.
3 – What campaign generated the conversion rate the lowest? Identify the causes that generated this result and deduct in practices to avoid in terms of content, purpose, time-off, etc..
.
4 – What brought segmentation and targeting the best results? And what tactics to customize content worked best? Discover the contacts that are most responsive to your messages and analyze their interests.
.
5 – What e-mail has been transferred and shared the most? Analyze the content of the latter to understand why this virus was more communication than others.
.
6 – What campaigns have obtained a number of high churn or complaints? Compare his e-mails with those who did not cause similar reaction with contacts and think about improvements to your next communication.
.
7 – Have you changed your mailing frequency and increased the number of emails sent per week? What were the results in terms of deliverability or complaints?
.
8 – Do you change your contact list? Did you remember to update it by removing inactive addresses or robots to optimize your delivery rates?
.
9 – Integration of social networks in your content is it properly done? Your e-mails are they adapted to the consultation on mobile or tablet?
.
10 – What tests did you perform (Spilt-testing, visual rendering, etc.)? What this brought to you in terms of performance? What tests they will remain in place?

10 Main steps for a successful Email Campaign

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 06:28 PM PDT

I read this article think to share with you guys .

Whether acquisition strategies or loyalty, e-mail marketing is now inevitable that a channel has been proven. Different rules and practices are followed, however, its use is a success. Since the establishment of the database until the sending end, here are 10 steps to set up a successful email campaign.

# 1 – The creation of a database
Most important in the acquisition of e-mails is the consent of the contact. Start by asking your customers if they wish to receive your news by e-mail with the agreement and collect the e-mails, names, etc.. Leverage your website to collect email addresses of potential customers, set up quizzes or surveys to develop your database, thinking of course always get the prior permission of contacts.
.
# 2 – The choice of message
Segment your database according to a typology of relevant contacts (clients, prospects for minima) and to send e-mails to relevant content, tailored to your target and your goals. You agree that it is not really appropriate to send an offer for a bikini to a man … Other rules are specific to the message to meet: Choose a subject near and avoid capital letters, punctuation and spamwords.
.
# 3 – Customizing the message
Use the information you have on your contacts to send them e-mails. For example and according to the customs of your business, call them by their first names or enter the store closest to home. Also consider the dynamic customization of content that can adapt an insert in the e-mail to the profile of contact. For example, on a campaign, include in the insert dynamic supply bikini waxing for women and supply electric razor for men.
.
# 4 – Shaping the message
Create a message in plain text and HTML so that your contacts can read whatever your communications preferences for consultation. Set up a ratio image / text balance, heal your video and give your contacts the opportunity to react with various levels of calls to action.
.
# 5 – Adding a social dimension
Remember to include content sharing on social networking sites in your e-mails. And also promotes your social pages with that channel in order to develop conversations with your contacts.
.
# 6 – Preparation for shipment
For your email campaigns result in the inbox properly, optimize your deliver ability. Among the good: the indispensable unsubscribe link with a simple unsubscribe process, the integrity of the HTML code, do not make use of external style sheets, do not send contacts or inactive for a long time on the address … error. [For more information on this subject, read "10 Ways to optimize deliverability"]
.
# 7 – Testing
Before final submission, search for the slightest error: broken link, bad arrangement of images, etc. .. Take time to check the visual message of your courier and on the different browsers and the possible presence of spamwords.
.
# 8 – Sending
Your communications should arrive at the best time in the inboxes of your contacts. For example, in the evening for the young, for retirees in the morning and by noon for professionals. But these times are different for each company and industry, so it's up to you to suit your target.
.
# 9 – Analysis of returns
To continuously improve the delivery of your email campaigns, analyze the results of previous shipments. Open rates, click, processing, complaint, or churn, these indicators give you an idea of the success or failure of your campaign. Your open rate is at half mast: test 3 different the next time your object with samples of your database before generalization to all your contacts. Your click through rate does not climb: test various levels of calls to action more or less engaging. Every weakness found, take the time to test your ideas for improvement and evolve for the better your communications.
.
# 10 – The multi-channel campaign
Go further by setting up a multi-channel communication strategy. And you will receive a maximum of people. SMS, social networks, mailing paper or display advertising … Consider the complementarity of different means of communication to optimize your results faster and reach your goals.

VenomSEO, worth it?

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 06:24 PM PDT

I've done some searching but all I find are "help" threads, to be honest. I want to start building profile links but I cannot afford Xrumer yet. Would VenomSEO be a good substitute for Xrumer until I build up enough money? I am interested in it since it can supposedly solve captcha's on it's own. Would you guys recommend it?

I am going to college this month so I am quite short on money. I could probably afford to buy a month of VenomSEO. If it worked well, I could probably turn a profit fairly quickly.

How long does it take for adsense ads to show?

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 06:17 PM PDT

Hey,
I tried to make a new account, however they denied my account for poor content.

I tried to make another account with a different website. They found another account.

So now I'm using that account. With the first website. I just put the code on the site.

How long does it take for the ads to show up?

Another Method: Play Google Like A Fiddle -> Top Rankings In HOURS

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 06:04 PM PDT

People liked the other method I posted so I thought I'd share another so hopefully some of my BHW brothers can benefit and start cashing in.

Another Method:

This Method is about how to drive tons of targeted traffic using Google News!

Google news is the search engine for all news published within Google. It’s pretty hard to get listed on Google news but if you know how got listed for the popular keyword, results of the traffic are amazing! Google news shows the first paragraph of the article and links to the rest content. It’s almost impossible to get your whole website listed in Google news, so we are going to use some handy 3rd party syndication websites!

Obviously we need to get our page indexed in Google news for our promotional needs. I think that it’s easier than you thought. Submitting press releases to the appropriate web sources is our solution. We need to find a good site to submit our press release. This press release website will be listed in Google news.

First of all go here: (I can't post links yet so just the Google News site) and type in the main niche keyword. For example “cure acne” and have a look what results you will get. Now you need click these news links and find a web site with press release submission service. One good press release submission web site is pr log org is the domain (I can't post URL's yet) worked really well for me, got listed fast.

Here are some good alternatives:
(You'll have to PM me for them since I can't post links yet) Now register an account with any one of them, it’ll take you less than 5 minutes. Write press release (it is pretty much just an article) related to your niche/product and use a promotional link in the end of it. Try to raise some curiosity from the reader to make him click this link. Link should lead to your website you are selling/affiliating the final product. Try to keep 2-4% keyword density throughout your press release. Submit your press release and go for the next keyword. Write a new targeted article to for the new keyword and submit another press release. I really suggest you to create a small keyword list for your product. It should contain about 7-20 keywords and preferably all of your supplementary keywords should contain your main keyword. For example if your main keyword is how to get rid of acne your keyword list will look like this:
1) how to get rid of acne
2) how to get rid of acne marks
3) how to get rid of acne spots
4) how to get rid of acne naturally
5) how to get rid of acne overnight
6) how to get rid of acne fast
7) how to get rid of acne tips
8) how to get rid of acne medication
9) how to get rid of acne treatment
10) how to get rid of acne in 3 days

You can go on and add more keywords but 5-7 keywords is just fine for the start. Implement all these techniques for all of your keywords from the keyword list of your website. This method is great for generating targeted traffic as well as creating a good search engine visibility for your website.

If you just do this over and over again you can have a Google News spot at the top of Google for your keyword without doing SEO and that "news" page can feed to your real site!

Hope this helps some of my BHW friends :)

I can HELP YOU get ScrapeBox Automated

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 06:02 PM PDT

I've recently posted threads about Automating Scrapebox and since then I spent some time to have it working. I considered putting it out as a WSO or Service, but think it would be to much distraction from my goals. Polishing up the application and creating User Documentation so that Anyone from Noobs to Pro could use the product would take a lot of effort in other directions.

Ultimately I think it would take away from my project goals and I don't want to be in the Link Building industry competing with DFB, Backlink Genie and other good service that exists already. Unfortunately with those services you are tied into their links and don't have much control over the quality of links so I decided to do my own ScrapeBox Automation!

Anyway, I figured a better way to stay on track with my own goals would be to offer up my help to others who wanted to get thieir ScrapeBox automated and in return trade something that might be useful to me!

For example I might be interested in trading some good lists which I don't plan on trading with others and will be only my personal use or I might be interested in software sharing, like SENuke or xRumer. I would like to find someone who owns xRumer so I can start to automate it as well...

So if anyone is interested in getting their ScrapeBox or xRumer automated, PM me and lets see if we can help each other out!

Good Luck guys!

We've been using it to scrape data from websites for a couple of months.

METHOD: Foodie For College Areas

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 05:28 PM PDT

Just so you know this is not my method. I recently moved to an area which saw this in play and thought that someone else could use this method in their area.

If you live in a college town this is golden!!!

You basically start a website in a college town area.

Name it related to the school and you offer online food ordering for the local businesses.

You have carry out menu area, delivery etc.

Everything must be programed in including but not limited to showing exactly what is open at that time.

You will then go to local businesses and convince them to have orders placed online and then give you a % of the cut or a small fee per order.

You process all the orders with your merchant account and then you have the system fax in the orders to their fax machines.

Kids in the town talk! Soon enough you will have hundreds of orders bringing in a nice residual income.

The reason this works so well is because people in general do not want to drop $1k+ to put up some system and have someone maintain it in hopes to get a few orders.

This will obviously not work with franchises!

Once you get enough sign ups and you want to generate an inital buzz try ordering some door hangers (get the permit from the city $15-40 and deliver to the area to advertise the new site ($300 investment roughly).

This should be worth at least $xx,xxx a year or more

enjoy!

:D

How are You Guys Pinging your ScrapeBox Blasts?

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 05:24 PM PDT

Hi guys,
  1. After a SB blast, or after a senuke run (i got one on fiverr, got the forum link URLs back)...what is the best way to ping these URLs to get them indexed?
  2. I've heard of pinging some today, some tomorrow, etc to get it more natural....but how are people doing that?
  3. One method I hear is making an RSS feed out of your links and then uploading the xml file to a random domain, then bookmarking the shit out of that rss url. is this the usual method for pinging your SB and senuke blasts?

Once again, you guys are amazing...I can completely understand why people want to give back to this community all the time.

Thanks

Dear BHW members, i really think i can write articles, but are they good articles? is it good content for a webpage?
I'm posting a link for an article and I'm asking for some feedback from fellow BHWers.
I hope i get a lot of replies and criticism.
It's around 600 words article with "diet" as a keyword.

Anyone here use "biverr" (Fiverr clone)

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 04:57 PM PDT

I've messed around with it a bit, but when going to post a new gig, it doesn't do anything as far as saving it as a gig. Just refreshes the page after hitting "save"

Any ideas?

Adsense & Large Network of Sites

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 04:55 PM PDT

adsense does not like a large network of sites and many people have reported that all their sites with adsense have been banned. i am wondering whats the safe cutoff limit to the number of micro niche adsense websites you should have.. too many and they will trigger a red flag

Cant understand what I am doing wrong

[CPA] My $100/DAY Journey

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 04:17 PM PDT

Hello BHW members,

Me and my friend Jerra (a BHW member too) were thinking some days ago, that it's time to start making some money online [LONG TERM!]

I made some money online, but not constant, I made $100 in one day, and $0 next week or and so on, SO I was thinking, LOL, WTF am I doing ? I have the brain, potential, tools, time and a good friend (somebody you can trust) to get something on the wheels.

My other thread, that I posted some days ago, is telling you everything that you need to know about what I will do, but I summarize a bit here what we are will do:

- Find a Niche (sorry, can't tell what niche, anyway we offer some tool to our "public")

- Make a simple wordpress website, with cool theme so that it will be attractive

We will use the home page for something like "DOWNLOAD THE LATEST TOOL NOW!"

- When they download our tool, from the homepage, they will actually get a simple C# application
Thanks to duzkerotzki for giving us a nice trick about how to trick the "public", for more infos please check his thread in the CPA section, it's called [HOW TO] Increase Sharecash Earnings

Ok, so after they download and open the C# application, they will be redirected to another page of our website, with the real tool, but there will be a content locker from adscendmedia because from what I read here, adscendmedia is one of the best. (MONEY MONEY MONEY!)

- Ok, so now, that our website is set, me and my buddy Jerra will split our work:

ME:

I will use two facebook viral applications, to get visits to our website from facebook (I will really do my best into this, because you know ... Facebook is ... FACEBOOK!)

I will create some camtasia videos on my computer about our tool that we "promote" with our website, in HD so that the "public" will be like "WOW!"

JERRA:

Jeremy is from UK, so he will do article writing and submit them to articlebase (like 2-3 articles/day).

He will also upload videos to youtube (he has some youtube accounts, so he will change the tags+title). After like 10 uploads of my video, to different accounts, we will edit the video, and after 10 other uploads, I will create another video and so on ...

Don't know yet how many videos we will upload daily, but after I finish setting up the facebook viral applications, I will do youtube too, but I think around 5/day or so.

So, this is how we will get traffic, after 1-3 weeks, we will see which method brings us the most traffic, and both we will work on that.

So this is what we did until now:

Website Done [ ]

Approved by AscendMedia [X]

EXE file trick [X]

Keyword research [X]

Youtube Traffic (START) [ ]

Youtube Traffic over 500 views/video ( )

Facebook Traffic (START) [ ]

Facebook Viral Event App Traffic ( )

Articles Traffic (START) [ ]

Articles Ranking on #1 PAGE for keywords [ ]

Articles Traffic ( )

AdscendMedia Clicks ( )

AdscendMedia Leads ( )

AdscendMedia Earnings/Day ( )

This is what we did until now (meaning today: 10 AUGUST, 2:13 AM and we started like 5 hrs ago), now we wait for the domain and hosting to be set up (the namespaces were set for the domain and hosting today, because we only bought the domain today), ANYWAY, tomorrow we will start working on the website and rest.

WE EXPECT THAT EVERYTHING WILL GO BY PLAN!:dog_walk2 (LOL)

IF YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT. :tee:

! ME AND JERRA, WE ARE NEW INTO CPA, THE ONLY THINGS THAT WE KNOW ABOUT CPA, IS WHAT WE READ FROM THIS FORUM (THANK YOU GUYS AGAIN! YOU ROCK) SO WE WILL DO OUR BEST TO ACCOMPLISH WHAT WE PLANNED AND WE WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN! :headbang:

WE WILL NOT! GIVE UP UNTIL WE MAKE $100/DAY! :D

SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH, BUT ENGLISH IS NOT MY 1ST LANGUAGE. :)

I WILL TRY TO UPDATE THE THREAD DAILY, VIA COMMENTS. ;)

IF YOU HAVE SOME QUESTIONS YOU CAN COMMENT OR PM.:06:

Basically the plugins submits your post to social media sites that you have an account for. I think this would really help with seo, no?

How Do I Get Google To Recognize BLs

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 04:13 PM PDT

Hi Everyone
I have a 2-3 yr old domain with around 2-3 hundred manually submitted links to directories and bookmarking sites and such, for low competition keywords

The prob is when i go to Webmasters Google only recognizes 9 of these links..... seriously.

Is there something that im missing? the links have been submitted for months you would think that would be enough time for them to be crawled? Is there something I have to do?

If you need any clarifications just ask

I have put a lot of work into this any advice is greatly appreciated.

Is Indian sex traffic worth anything?

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 04:03 PM PDT

Just wondering as I've found a keyword with 200k monthly search volume (mostly Indian) with very low seo competition. Would this be worth much? Does anybody have experience with this kind of traffic?

EDIT: 200k exact for anybody wondering...

Adsense Plugin For Wordpress?

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 04:03 PM PDT

I have tried many adsense plugins and most have been very bad for wordpress.

The easiest I have found is "easy peasy adsense" however I am suspecting that it hijacks your site because sometimes it redirects my site. Which I also think is the reason that adsense blocked my url, and I had to get re-approved.

The thing I like about the plugin is that you place the adsense codes and then it gives you some snippet of code to simply paste into your posts and the adsense appear there.

Anyone know of a similar plugin that can do this?

Thanks

demographic: College Students

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 03:50 PM PDT

I've discovered somewhat of an untapped niche and am seeking a means to market to college students, specifically, in the Us.
Prime target being active/enrolled undgergrads... I'm planning a social media push to get the service out there in front of students, but Time is of the essence!

What would you suggest as a fairly straightforward and effective way to get into the inboxs'/newsfeeds/sidebars of college students around the US?

On a side note, if anyone has access to resources on facebook/twitter that might aid the campaigns' effort of appealling to a large number of active college students in a prompt manner, please P-M me.

Recently i've been dropshipping shoes from China but the buyers on ebay are all like shoe people so they can tell instantly which shoes are fake and which arent because they have multiple pairs of them already. So I can't sell fake shoes anymore unless I make micro accounts and start with 0 feedback on all of them which is more work. Some people don't complain that the shoes are fake but others do and they leave negative feedback. =/ So other people wont want to buy from me.

SO my question is anyone know of a good product/item to sell on ebay that will make me good money and will please the customer because they either wont care that the item is fake, the item isnt fake, or the item is too fake that they dont even notice.

I need to do alot of keyword research but google captcha me

Im hitting a captcha after about 200 lookups of keywords. I need to look up 8000+ keywords. I need to know the number the following two searches:

http://www.google.com/search?q="mississippi%20relief"&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8
and

http://www.google.com/search?q=inanchor%3A"mississippi%20relief"%20intit le%3A"mississippi%20relief"&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

One i just need to find out how many sites are competing for the term

the other one is how many sites are SEO for the term.

Does anyone know of a bulk tool for this?

Thanks
